    Research & Problems

One half credit of Research and Problems (R&P) I, II, or III will be earned each year that a student successfully completes the required Academy major project in grades 10-12. For their projects, students may solve design problems, do individual or group research, or participate in Destination Imagination or other approved competitions. Transcript credit will be awarded upon completion of the course requirements.

Students are required to do an individual or group experimental research project (IERP/GERP) in the 9th grade as part of their Scientific Research and Design course Most freshmen enter their projects in the SCI://TECH Science Fair, and, if successful, may compete in the Science Engineering Fair of Houston, The Exxon-Mobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair, and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

In the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades students may choose to do an IERP, or may apply for BEST Robotics, Engineering Design Competition, Destination ImagiNation (DI), Firefighting Robotics, or an approved individual or group project related to their interests. (We will not be able to sponsor, nor will students earn project credit for, DI in the 9th grade.) These students will earn one-half credit (local) in Research and Problems for each year of successful project work and will be given a grade in the course by their teacher/sponsor. A journal, technical paper or other project report, and a public demonstration are required of ALL students earning R&P credit.

Each student will complete and submit an R&P Contract by mid-September. In the contract the student commits to his or her first and second choice of projects, and then gets sponsor and parent approval. Students are then notified of their project assignment. A special application is also required for DI. Marginal or unsatisfactory work will result in denial of approval for the same project area the next year. The default project is IERP.

R&P work must be completed by the end of the third nine-weeks (March 5th unless the initial competition is later). A progress report will be provided the first and second nine weeks. Grades will be posted to transcripts during the fourth nine-weeks. Sponsors will provide a schedule of meeting and due dates for each project (DI, EDC, BEST, FFR, IERP).

By being sponsored and approved for their R&P Project contract, students agree to participate in ALL levels of competition for which they qualify. In the event of unforeseen school-based conflicts, the ORHS procedure for determining participation will be followed. Other emergencies must be certified by a parent/guardian.

In the event a student is unable to demonstrate his/her project within the normally scheduled competition, a faculty/parent R&P Colloquium will be scheduled for this purpose in early April. A specific date and time will be announced in August.

Failure to complete the R&P project will result in dismissal review.
