Dr. Caffery

Dr. Caffery joined the Academy staff in June 2007 as the new Headmaster. She comes to the Academy with 20 years of experience in education. Originally from a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, she graduated from Agnes Scott College, where she earned a degree in Biology. After moving to Texas, Dr. Caffery became certified to teach science and taught Chemistry and AP Chemistry. She earned a Master of Education in Counseling and Development and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Lamar University. Dr. Caffery is also a Licensed Professional Counselor and worked in both the school and private settings as a counselor. Hobbies include reading, cooking, and nutrition and exercise.

Born in Niagara Falls, NY, Ms. Terry moved to Texas from Cleveland, Ohio in 2000. She is married to husband Gavin and has 2 daughters Megan and Erin, and one son Gavin II. She enjoys traveling and loves animals. She now has 3 Boxers - Maggie,Gus, and Harley.

Mrs. Costanzo joined the Academy staff in August 2007. Linda was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and raised in Bellaire, Texas. She is a proud member of the "'fightin' Texas Aggie" Class of 1978 and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from that fine institution. She has been in Conroe ISD for seven years teaching Bioling, Chemistry, Aquatic Science and Scientific Research and Design. She has four children: Jennifer, Stephen, Michael, and John.

Mrs. Lowenberg graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso. She taught in El Paso, Texas for five years, moved to the Houston area and is in her 10th year of teaching at the Academy. She is married to Herb Turks and they have 5 children, 4 dogs, 1 rat, 1 cat, 1 bird, 1 hedgehog, and 1 cockroach.

Mrs. Pariseau joined the Academy Staff in August 2001. She has been a teacher in CISD since February 1995. She holds a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics from the State University of New York at Albany which she received in 1986. In 1990 she received a teaching certificate for secondary Social Studies from Franklin Pierce College in the state of New Hampshire and then also obtained one from the state of Colorado, upon her husbands job transfer. While in Colorado she completed her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Chapman University. After moving to Texas in 1994, she procured her teaching credentials in both Secondary Social Studies and Mathematics. Mrs. Pariseau began teaching in CISD at York Junior High where she began mid-year and then transferred to McCullough when it became an 8th and 9th grade campus, before coming to the Academy. She has taught the CISD curriculum from 7th grade level through Calculus. At home she enjoys spending time with her husband David and two children.

Mr. Perzan

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, he has been teaching for over one-quarter century at various levels and subjects including the natural sciences and art. Prior to teaching, Perzan did graduate research work on nocturnal behavior patterns in Glaucomys volans sp. under acclaimed ethologist Dr. Patricia DeCoursey. He has worked as a naturalist for the Illinois Department of Conservation and is also a faculty member at Montgomery College, teaching courses in Biology and Anatomy. He has three grown children, several animals, and was recently seen climbing Machu Picchu with Dr. Melinda Wooderson-Perzan. His responsibilities at the Academy interfere with his kayaking, hiking and ale-brewing. He is currently planning his retirement activities, which will include spending three months hiking the Pacific Crest Trail.

Mr. Rippetoe

Born in Dallas, TX, Mr. Rippetoe has been married to wife Suzanne, a teacher at McCullough Jr. High, for over twenty years. He is the proud father of two children, Michael and Marta. His hobbies include RC flying, volleyball, stained glass, mowing, fishing, and electronics. Mr. Rippetoe is the current Guinness Record holder for the largest playable electric guitar, and he has a star, "The Big Ripper," that was named after him by his students.
Other notable facts about Mr. Rippetoe include that he was in a movie with Clint Howard who was in a movie with Kevin Bacon (that's two degrees, for those counting), his favorite band is "The Clash," his favorite color is "Blue, I mean yellow," and his favorite movies include "The Sound of Music" and almost anything by Alfred Hitchcock.

Mr. Ullrich

Mark Ullrich was born in Montevideo, Minnesota, but grew up in Independence, Iowa. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. He has been teaching for 33 years including the last 13 for the Academy of Science and Technology. He has two sons both of whom attend Notre Dame. Paul is a senior in Aeorspace and Mechanical Engineering and Jeff is a sophomore in Marketing and Political Science. His hobbies include golf, crossword puzzles, and playing the computer game, Civilization.

Mr. Van Alstyne

Bill Van Alstyne is a native Texan with 33 years of classroom teaching experience. He is a graduate of Sam Houston State University with a bachelors degree in physics and mathematics and a masters degree in mathematics.
Upon graduating from college, Bill served two years in the U.S. Army as a commissioned officer in the Army Material Command. His background in math and physics landed him an assignment at Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona as a project engineer. He was involved in testing and procurement of munitions and weapons systems.
After leaving the Army in 1973, he moved back to Texas and started his career as a teacher of mathematics, physics, and computer science. Bills favorite math courses are Algebra 2 and Calculus, although he has taught just about every math course in the high school curriculum. His approach to teaching math is to show how math is used in the real world and that you learn math when you get your hands dirty and do the problems.
Besides being a mathematics teacher, Bill spends most of his free time working as an electrician. He is a master electrician and does contracting when he is not in the classroom teaching.

Mr. Walker

Larry Walker graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and is certified to teach secondary science in the state of Texas. Walker has been teaching exceptional high school students for over twenty years. He currently teaches Advanced Placement Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Chemistry PAP. He has conducted research in organic chemistry at the University of Houston and molecular biology at Sigma Genosys. Walker served six years on the Board of Directors of the National Consortium for Specialized Schools of Mathematics, Science, and Technology (NCSSSMST). He co-created and directed the World in 2020: Transition to Sustainability student conference and currently acts as project liaison for the Keystone Center Youth Policy Summit and other Consortium projects.
